November Athlete News

As we are only a few weeks from summer, the Macpac Motatapu team have been busy preparing for our epic event and can't wait to welcome you all to Lake Wānaka, Arrowtown and Queenstown on the 5th March.

We are thrilled to see such a great uptake in all our events, and for those of you who haven't yet entered, we only have space on the 15km Miners Trail with walk and run options (95% full), the 47km UDC Mountain Bike event (over 90% full) and the 4km Jennian Homes Junior Trail run. So get in quick if you want to be part of Aotearoa's largest off-road sporting event!

2022 Start Area
We have some great news about the start area for the Ultra Run and UDC Mountain Bike event for the 2022 Macpac Motatapu. We are moving across the road onto Glendhu Station! We want to thank John and Emily McRae for their hospitality and for letting us utilise their land for the start area, as well as the event parking. They have so many sustainability projects which we are proud to be a part of and this change will help those. John and Emily are building a large worm farm in this area, which organic waste from their station, wedding business and Bike Glendhu's cafe, Velo will go into. The worms will then produce fertiliser which will be used across the station and will also feed their native plant regeneration programme. 80% of all fees from all sporting events on the Glendhu Station goes back into the planting project and their efforts to become a carbon positive station.

So how will the logistics of this start area work? The graphic below shows you how we will be managing the car parking, registration and information tents and start areas on the Glendhu Station side of Mount Aspiring Road. It means people will be able to move around the race site more easily without having to negotiate the road and for anyone who didn't like riding up the bank out of the Glendhu Bay Motor Camp, that is no longer an issue! This also means our friends at the Glendhu Bay Motor Camp will have more room to welcome you if you would like to come and camp for the weekend, win win, we reckon!

Mahu Whenua
We are proud to work with the Mahu Whenua team and help highlight what they are doing on the Motatapu, Mt Soho and Glencoe high-country stations. The Mahu Whenua philosophy is for sustainable farming and it aptly translates to "healing the land". They have planted over 1 million native trees, flaxes, shrubs and grasses and are pioneering a seedling programme, which is breathing new life into an exhausted landscape; the eradication of pests and predators is bringing native species back from the brink in the area.

To ensure it continues, more than 90% of the land was placed under protective covenants in 2015 (Queen Elizabeth the Second Trust), making it the largest conservation undertaking on private land in New Zealand's history.

We are privileged to work with them as they continue to restore and enhance these three iconic high-country Stations; that we are lucky to be able to race through on our event day!
